While rampage shooting victims were treated for injuries, the chattering class was trying to make sense of the rampage shootings at the Umpqua community college. Egged on by the President’s news conference, who chummed the political ether with even more non-sensical commentary, the talking heads were out of control last week. Resist the urge to focus too much on these people. It may make for good ratings or polling spikes with base voter groups, but all it makes for bad policy.
The people of Oregon, more specifically the victims and family members of the rampage killer in Roseburg, Oregon, are in the best position to address what happened and how to cope with it. The President, Members of Congress, state and local officials, including the community college president need to cool their jets. Survivors and families need space. As great Americans always do, they’ll cope and come out of this stronger and ready to tackle whatever life sends their way.
According to several witnesses the killer asked victims before assassinating them: Are you a Christian? Those who answered died for something bigger than themselves. For most believing Christians, these people died as martyrs. Whether you ascribe to that point of view or not, we must honor their sacrifice and, indeed, bravery. And from what I’ve read about the Roseburg community, the victims and survivors will not be forgotten. And it also seems that they will not allow the tragedy to be used for shameless politicking by liberal elites in their endless quest to enact insane gun control laws.
As for the evil doer, frankly, I’ve made it a point not to learn much about him. I don’t even know his name. He is not worth it. All you need to know is that he was en evil person who, by definition, has a warped moral core and may have been mentally deranged. Let the experts sort out the reasons why he did what he did, for that community deserves to know. However, he was not the first and certainly will not be the last rampage shooter in the United States or, indeed, the world.
As expected, the Left has unleashed a volley of anti-gun rhetoric in order to move the ball forward in their ongoing battle against gun ownership in America. The vitriol will increase in the weeks and months ahead. They may even try to make it a 2016 presidential campaign issue. Banning guns is an infantile and knee-jerk reaction based in a failed belief that says, in part, if you take away the means (guns) you also eliminate or decrease the chances for violent crime.
Just like the prohibition of alcohol was complete waste of time, a gun-free society more so. Modern gun free societies included Nazi Germany or to this day and a little more closer to home, Communist Cuba and North Korea. Nations that restrict or ban gun ownership, freedom and security eventually cease to exist. But as they’ve done with socialist healthcare and the other crown jewels of their left-wing platform for America, the Left will not give up. If they think there is even a remote chance of curtailing this fundamental constitutional right, the Left will seize it.
Republicans and reasonable-minded Democrats need to be clear with this lot on the left, and the legions that support them: grow up. Gun-grabbing is the thing of fascists and despots. It is un-American.
