Issues Trumped Partisan Politics in Arlington County Special Election

For the first time since the 1990s a Republican won a seat on the Arlington County Board. Attorney John Vihstadt won yesterday’s special election by a rather healthy margin. His secret?

We’re tired in these parts of the County’s (controlled by the Arlington Democratic Party machine) tax and spend policies, especially on wasteful programs such as million dollar bus stations, bike rental kiosks, and luxury aquatic centers. The County Board is out of touch with voters. They have an old world view of the proper size and role of government. Vihstadt has promised to change all that. We shall see.

The extreme liberal wing of the Virginia Democratic Party machine tried, and failed, to make the special election about Medicaid expansion and ObamaCare. There were some other tricks tried and tested in other state-wide elections by the McAuliffe machine. The voters refused to pay attention to any of it.

Unlike prior hyper partisan state elections the past few years, this one was on the issue. And that is a good thing in these parts, and a lesson for others in both political parties.
