Want to go to Cuba? You May Just be a Political Voyeur

Political voyeurs (n) – people who enjoy seeing the political pain or distress of others.

If you’re planning a trip to Cuba, you may just be a political voyeur. My family fled that forsaken, some would say cursed island, many years ago because communism and oppression was not their thing. Nothing has really changed since they left, except that things are much worse today for the people left behind.

The Obama Administration has liberalized cultural or people-to-people travel to Cuba, in a naive and very elitist view that Americans traveling to the island will advance better relations. If you’re into seeing extreme poverty and sadness, go right ahead. You’re a political voyeur.

Most travel to Cuba is really tourism travel. Tourism travel is illegal under U.S. law but folks keep finding creative ways around it. Think before you click. The U.S. Government agency charged with policing these trips, issued a warning to some of these tourism companies. Most of these trips are outside the law and I hope OFAC will begin cracking down on them.

Want to travel to the Caribbean? There are close to thirty  places to visit in that crescent-shaped island chain besides Cuba. The Cuban people have a lot on their minds. Catering to tourists is not one of them. Freedom is. The Cuban people do not need Americans to travel to Cuba to tell them what to do, they need Americans (and Cuban exiles) to stop spending money going to the island.

This year marks my twentieth year living and working in the Washington, DC area. And when it comes to Cuba, one thing I learned long ago, and has made me an even more strident supporter of economic sanctions, is that folks who support closer relations with the Cuban Communist government hate (yes, hate), envy, or dislike Cuban-Americans.

Why? Because, we know the truth and they cannot handle the truth. With or without the Communists, these people want to keep the island isolated, poor, and suffering, but they know we’re not going to let them. So let them manipulate our laws. In the end, freedom will win out. And they will lose. As usual.
