The Obama Administration’s Easter Gift for the Cuban Regime, an Economic Lifeline

Just in time for Easter, the Obama Administration this afternoon issued the long-awaited Cuba travel regulations that will allow for more travel and remittances to Cuba.

It is no coincidence whatsoever that the Communist Party Congress just wrapped up its business earlier this week.  A nice life-line for the regime that joins the chorus of praise, and support, for the brothers coming all the way from global “pillars” of leadership such as Beijing:

“At present, both China as well as Cuba find themselves at a crucial phase of development. I’m convinced that, under the direction of comrade Raul Castro Ruz, the socialist revolution and construction of Cuba without any doubt will achieve new successes,” the Chinese president Hu Jintao said.

We’re sure to hear the perfunctory “help for the Cuban people” argument from supporters of easing the embargo. The thing is, however, the opposition folks, such as Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet, do not want the U.S. to ease sanctions. They want the opposite, kind of what the Obama team did to Mubarak in Egypt or, some would argue better yet, what they are doing to Qadaffi in Libya.

If you want to read the new regulations, here you go. I am going to pore through them and will post an update on the specifics later next week.
